Post Fellowship Education in Spine Surgery (PFET)

The Spine Society of Australia is committed to the advancement of spinal surgery. In the view of the Society this means that in order to perform complex modern spine surgery that special post fellowship training for either Orthopaedic surgeons or Neurosurgeons is needed.

The Society recognizes that the disciplines of both Orthopaedic surgery and Neurosurgery bring unique skills to the process of training a spine surgeon.

The Spine Society, in conjunction with the Australian Orthopaedic Association now offers accreditation of hospital based spinal surgery fellowships in Australia (and New Zealand) for both Orthopaedic surgeons and Neurosurgeons. This acccreditation process is part of the Post Fellowship Education and Training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).

What this means:

For surgeons wishing to gain post fellowship training in spine surgery.

  • Both Orthopaedic surgeons or Neurosurgeons can apply for a RACS accredited Fellowship program that has been designed by the Spine Society of Australia by both Orthopaedic surgeons and Neurosurgeons, and has the educational infrastructure assistance, backup and support of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

For surgeons providing hospital based fellowships in spine surgery.

  • You can apply to have your fellowship program accredited. This process should make your program more attractive to potential fellows. The Spine Society will also advertise your fellowship on the Societies website, contact the SSA Secretariat for details.
